Welcome to Hedgehogs Class
Welcome back to a new school year. I hope you have all had a wonderful summer holiday! It is lovely to be welcoming back some of our ‘old hedgehogs’ and to welcome ‘new hedgehogs to the class!
If there is anything you would like to discuss please feel free to come and talk to us. We are often busy first thing in the morning when all the children are arriving and so after school is the best time to catch us for a chat. You can make the appointment by either catching us at the beginning or end of the school day or alternatively by phoning or emailing the office.
Mrs Bartlett is teaching on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and has Planning, Preparation and Assessment time on a Monday afternoon and will not be in the classroom at this time. On a Monday afternoon the children will have PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) with Mrs Sparrow, from 1.30-2pm. This will be followed by P.E with a Sport’s Coach, from 2-3pm. Mrs Upton will be teaching on Thursday and Friday. Mrs Sparrow will be supporting the learning in our class on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings and on Tuesday and Friday mornings it will be Mrs Stinchcombe.
At 3.05pm we will bring the children to the classroom play area gate to hand over to you. If someone else is collecting your child, please inform the office or one of us of any changes to pick up arrangements in advance.
For ‘Show and Share’ three children will get a chance to bring something in to show and talk about it and answer other children’s questions. A note will be sent home the week before to tell you and your child when it is their turn. Look out for a letter in your child’s book bag. Our topic for the term is ‘Beautiful Birds and Brilliant Beasts’. It is always great, but not necessary, if the ‘Show and Share’ can tie into our topic.
Reception children will soon receive a story sack and a picture book and Year 1 children will find a reading book in their bags this week. Please carefully read the separate letter for more information on story sacks and reading.
Year 1 children will receive a ‘homework pack’ each term. This does not need to be handed in. It will provide your child with things to practice at home, focusing on basic skills such as counting or number bonds. Key homework for Year 1 continues to be to read as regularly as possible and to learn their spellings. Your child will also have a red Spelling book. A set of words to learn to spell will be stuck in this book and sent home every Friday. They will also be tested on their spellings on a Friday. These will either be words that follow a spelling pattern e.g. make, made, snake… or they will be ‘High frequency’ or ‘Common Exception’ words (these terms are explained in the ‘Parent Pack’ which your child will be bringing home).
P.E will usually be on a Monday and Friday .It helps on these days if they can wear clothes they can change themselves. The PE days can vary, so please ensure that your child has all their P.E kit (blue or white shorts and T-shirt, jogging bottoms and outdoor trainers) in school at all times.
Children do need to have a pair indoor shoes and a pair of wellington boots that are left at school each day. They will also need to bring a coat with them every day as we often go for walks and go outside for play. Please ensure that everything is named clearly to avoid morning mayhem in the cloakroom!
Children should bring a named water bottle into school every day (containing water only please). This should be taken home at the end of each day so that it can be refilled with fresh water. Fruit or veg will be provided by the school as a snack, which they will eat before morning play. If you prefer, your child can bring in their own fruit or veg snack. Please ensure your child is also registered with www.coolmilk.com if you wish your child to receive milk at school. This is free for children under 5 and you can continue to buy milk for your child after they are 5. (See school newsletter for further details).
Please read the school newsletter carefully each week as it contains important information, letters and also tells you what we are working on each week in English and Maths. Also, look out for our termly skills map, which will give you further information on other subject areas. These will give you an idea of how you can help your child at home with their learning. School information and newsletters will be emailed to you unless you have requested otherwise at the office.
Finally, please could you make sure all their clothes and belongings are named. Most school uniform looks alike and we cannot reunite lost items with owners if they aren’t named!
I do hope that this information helps to give us all a smooth start to the term. If you are uncertain about any point or have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
