Welcome to Seals Class
Welcome back to a brand new school year! I hope you have all had a wonderful summer break and a chance to relax.
I am pleased to introduce myself as Seal Class’ new teacher, Miss Starkey. Some of you may recognise me from the previous school year, as I worked alongside Mrs. Phillips in Fox Class. I am delighted to be taking up this new post as year 5 class teacher, and am very much looking forwards to getting to know the children coming up from Otters Class and the new children that are joining our school.
I appreciate that the combination of a new class and a new class teacher can feel a little daunting. Rest assured that If you do have any questions or need to chat at all, that I am more than happy to meet you. I will be in school and contactable every day, however I will be away from the classroom on Wednesday. This is because of my PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) time in addition to NQT time as a Newly Qualified Teacher. Mrs Upton will be taking Seal Class in the morning for Guided Reading, English (poetry and SPAG work) and Maths. The children will have R.E with Miss Withers and P.E. with a Sport’s Coach in the afternoon.
Mrs. Stinchcombe will be supporting the leaning in our class on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and Miss Hannigan on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
The children in Seal class will remain in the same classroom as last year. At the end of each school day, I will bring the children out onto the playground as normal. Please could you let me know when you have collected your child and bear with me as I familiarise myself with new faces!
Over the next term we will be travelling back in time to Ancient Egypt. We will be learning all about the great explorer Howard Carter and his discovery of the famous Tutankhamun, as well as the mummification process, tales of the pharaohs, the role of the river Nile and the great pyramids. If you have any books or interesting facts about the Ancient Egyptians, please do bring them in, as we will be starting each school day with an ‘awesome fact’ that links to our topic.
P.E will take place on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. This can vary, however, so please ensure that your child has all their named P.E kit (including trainers) in school at all times. Please note that children are expected to change back into their school uniform after these sessions to ensure that kit stays at school and does not go missing. Children should take their P.E kits home at the end of each term to be washed.
Children should have indoor and outdoor shoes. Please can you ensure that these are clearly named, to avoid morning mayhem in the cloakroom!
Children should bring a named water bottle into school every day. This should be taken home at the end of the day so that it can be refilled with fresh water. Please fill these with water only.
This year we will be introducing a ‘Challenge wall’ into the classroom. The class will be set ‘mini challenges’ to complete throughout the term that will usually (but not always) coincide with current affairs or themes linked with our topic. These tasks are not compulsory, however children who do complete these challenges will be invited to share their findings with the class if they wish, and will receive a ‘challenge’ certificate.
A year 5 starter pack will be issued to all parents at the start of the school year. This is to help share the expectations of what is required of your child over the coming year and will contain documents linked with this. An electronic copy of the pack will also be available on the Seal Class web page, however please do contact me directly if your child has not received a pack by the end of the first week of school.
Homework and Spelling
Homework is an opportunity for you to see what we have been learning in class. This year, homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned to school the following Wednesday. Please note that if your child’s homework is late, it will be marked the following week.
Homework will include the following:
Please note that times tables tests will be carried out every Friday afternoon in class. Children are therefore expected to practice their times tables at home as well as in class in order to prepare them for these tests.
I am very much looking forward to see what the new school year brings for Seal Class!
Please do feel free to contact me if you have any questions or queries.
Miss C. Starkey and the Seal Class Team.
